Hello, I'm Nicola

I'm the person behind My Accountant Online — and I've been an accountant for 40 years. I'm a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA), a qualified Accounting Technician with the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) and a qualified Tax Technician with the Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT).

I come from a farming family, and many years ago my father suggested I should become either a vet or an accountant, as both were good careers. I chose accountancy. I was never particularly keen on blood and guts!

I started my training with a small accountancy practice and went on to work in several different firms, including one of the leading large accountancy practices at the time, gaining experience with many different types of businesses. I also spent a short time as Financial Controller of a large country estate.

I always knew that one day, I wanted to run my own accountancy practice. Eventually, I did just that, setting up and running two traditional high-street practices. Both continue to flourish today under new ownership.

After many years of running a traditional practice, I could see that the way people wanted to work with their accountant was changing. Many clients didn't want to take time out of their working day for meetings or phone calls, and I realised that working online could make things much more straightforward. I'm quite happy not spending my day on the phone either, so it suited me too! I could also reduce the costs of running a traditional office and pass those savings on to my clients.

So, in 2010, I set up My Accountant Online. At the time, running an accountancy practice online and almost entirely paper-free was fairly unusual. Today, of course, it's nothing particularly revolutionary — but we've continued to make full use of technology to keep things efficient and make life easier for our clients.

What I particularly enjoy is working with new and small businesses. I like helping people who are building something of their own, and taking care of the accounts and tax side of things so they can concentrate on running their business. I enjoy getting to know the businesses I work with, and helping to make the accounts and tax side of things as straightforward as possible.
